The Pale Diary

№ 0008699987

Common

Winter bird counts — kept in the North Ink stack.

Edition 8,699,987 of 1,000,000,000. 100 shapes, mostly pentagons, mostly rust. It sits in block 33,216, minted with that block's other 4,999 editions, scattered across the billion.

Someone numbered it in pencil. Night archivist Okonkwo set it down in a silver print, and the sheet shows fibers lifted where a label was peeled.

It is folio 987 of Willow 10, in the Wide Vault, North Ink stack. The keeper signed it twice.
